If we’re talking about layers in harmonies in Next to Normal, let’s talk about how for the entire show, Diana’s and Natalie’s parts always create dissonance. The only time where their harmonies don’t clash is at the end, in “Light.” And that’s beautiful and sad.
Basically, you could create an entire thesis about the metaphors in the music of Next to Normal, titled “Tom Kitt is a genius but also a major asshole”
