So I’ve been seeing things saying that Fun Home is “pretentious” and “shouldn’t have won” over certain shows this year.

Like, I totally get it. I’ve had shows I was really rooting for lose in the past. It can be disappointing! However, Fun Home winning is…well, this is different. Please name me one musical that centers around a lesbian as the main character that isn’t Fun Home. Please name me one musical that discusses a girl’s struggles with growing up and coming to terms with her own sexuality that isn’t Fun Home. Maybe it exists, but it hasn’t reached the mainstream light, which is the important thing. Queer girls finally have something we can relate to, a show that addresses many internal issues that one may face, like coming out of the closet to their parents, or realizing that, hey, crossdressing actually is okay, or even the awkward yet triumphant moments like having sex for the first time. Stories like these have may existed in the musical theatre world, but they hardly ever have the focus on a female character. It really does make all the difference.

Above all, Fun Home tells the true story of a woman named Alison Bechdel who later went on to become a feminist and lesbian icon with her comics and stories that speak to many people. The story told onstage is her story. Each scene is a reflection of her life, and it just so happens that many people, women and other genders alike, can in some ways relate.

Excuse me for saying this, but funny shows like Something Rotten often win, as do artsy shows like An American in Paris. (And yes, I do recognize that all of the nominees this year were amazing and creative and wonderful in their own right.) Please let us have this one year to celebrate Fun Home. Please let us celebrate the fact that, for once, a show that centers around lesbian issues and ideas and, more importantly, one woman’s struggles growing up took home the prize. Please let us have this one thing.
